Forum links are hyperlinks placed inside online forums or discussion boards, typically in a topic, thread, or user profile.

Forum backlinks usually appear inside the main body of a post, in a reply to that post, or within a user’s profile signature.

The theory is that, since backlinks pass SEO ranking value, links to your site on forums or discussion boards with high Domain Rating, like Reddit, Quora, GitHub, or Warrior Forum will improve your search engine rankings.

The truth is that forum links still help SEO…just not in that way anymore.

There was a time when SEOs would blast forum links en masse with manipulated anchor text, and it would work like a charm. Those days are gone.

But naturally placing a link or mentioning your website on relevant, high-traffic forums can still boost SEO, send referral traffic, and enhance AI brand mentions. You just need to do it the right way, including choosing the right websites and posting without getting banned (not easy for SEOs!).

In this guide to forum links, the PressWhizz team will show you exactly how to execute a forum link building strategy that actually works in modern SEO.

We’ll cover:

  • What forum links are
  • How they work
  • How to build forum links without getting penalized
  • Which tactics work and which are a waste of time and money
  • Our favorite forum posting sites

Forum backlinks are hyperlinks from online discussion forums, such as Reddit, Quora, and niche communities, that point back to your website for the purpose of enhancing search engine rankings.

These SEO backlinks appear in discussion threads, comments, user profiles, or signatures, and they often use clickable anchor text. Sadly, most modern external links from forums carry nofollow or UGC attributes to protect search engine results quality and prevent abuse.

Here is an example of a forum backlink inserted into a reply to a post:

SEOs use forum backlinks to generate referral traffic, build brand visibility, and potentially influence Google rankings and AI mentions. However, it’s much more complicated than simply forum link = SEO benefit.

Let’s do a quick SEO history lesson before continuing…

Between 2005 and 2012, SEOs absolutely hammered forums. Everyone spammed comments and keyword-stuffed signatures to manipulate Google’s PageRank algorithm. Back then, it was much easier to manipulate Google rankings through sheer link quantity.

Then came Google’s Penguin update in April 2012, which targeted manipulative link schemes and made mass forum backlink spam significantly less effective. That update devalued automated link building like signature or profile links and automated comments. Penguin has been part of the core algorithm since 2016, so Google has fine-tuned its spam signals and largely eliminated this form of link spam:

However, that doesn’t mean that forum posting for links is dead. It still has some benefits.

The benefits of building forum links include driving targeted referral traffic, enhancing search engine rankings, improving brand visibility in Google search and AI, and building brand authority and trust.

While you can’t just spam links anymore and hope to get SEO rankings, commenting on forums does still provide business benefits.

Here’s more on the advantages of using this forum link building strategy in SEO:

Drive Targeted Referral Traffic to Your Website

Forum backlinks drive targeted referral traffic by connecting your website with people already discussing topics related to your business. These visitors are often actively researching products, services, or solutions.

Reddit, Facebook, and Quora dominate Google SERPs now. If you drop a link to your website in a thread that ranks for your target keyword, that’s easy referral traffic coming your way.

Imagine if you Googled “best link building platform for local SEO” and saw this Reddit thread:

A business whose name is at the top would certainly get a click or at the very least a Google search, right? That’s why commenting on discussion boards is still helpful in modern SEO.

Also, these sites have highly targeted audiences, which is another advantage that provides SEO value. And since these visitors have already shown interest in your content, they’re more likely to engage with your website, visit additional pages, and potentially convert. This engagement can create indirect SEO benefits by increasing brand awareness, encouraging return visits, and generating opportunities for natural, high-quality backlinks.

Improve Brand Visibility and Awareness (Including AI)

Forum backlinks improve online visibility for your brand by introducing your business to people participating in relevant online communities and enhancing brand mentions in LLMs. Every time your website appears in a useful discussion, you create another opportunity for potential customers to discover your brand.

Repeated mentions across platforms like Reddit, Quora, and industry-specific forums can help people (and Google) recognize your business (especially when they keep seeing your name recommended by different people).

According to Ahrefs, in their 2025 study titled Top Brand Visibility Factors in ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews (75k Brands Studied), branded web mentions had a strong correlation (0.66–0.71) with AI search visibility. Branded search volume also showed a positive correlation, so getting your name out there could have benefits beyond traditional search engine optimization. Of course, correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation.

TL;DR: Brand mentions are valuable for increasing your brand’s appearance in LLMs, particularly AI Overviews. Even if forum posts earn you only nofollow links that don’t impact rankings directly, you still get indirect benefits.

Build Brand Authority and Trust

Forum backlinks can help build brand authority and trust when they’re included in genuinely helpful contributions. Answering questions, sharing useful resources, and offering relevant expertise shows people that your business knows what it’s talking about.

This is particularly valuable in niche-specific forums where members regularly exchange recommendations and discuss their experiences with different products or services.

Forum backlinks can help you build a more natural-looking backlink profile by adding links from relevant online communities alongside your editorial backlinks, guest posts, and other link sources.

Nearly every established brand has some form of community links or mentions. Google expects natural link acquisition to produce a diverse mix of links, rather than a profile made up entirely of SEO-driven placements.

OK, now that you know what forum link building is and why it’s valuable, you need to learn how to do it the right way so you don’t get banned (or banished from Google).

You need to build forum backlinks the right way, or you’ll risk getting your accounts banned and your links removed.

Moderators on forum submission sites are ban-happy (they have nothing else to do).

And building too many spammy backlinks too quickly can also increase your risk of Google penalties.

Here’s how to build forum links the right way:

  • Step 1) Find Relevant Forums in Your Niche: Use Google search operators like inurl:forum “your keyword”, “your niche” “discussion forum”, or site:reddit.com “your keyword” to uncover relevant communities. You can also use Ahrefs to analyze your competitors’ backlink profiles, filter for forum links, and identify communities where they’re already getting backlinks.
  • Step 2) Create and Optimize Your Forum Profile: Sign up, fill out your profile, and make sure your account looks legitimate and professional.
  • Step 3) Find Relevant Discussions to Participate In: Look for existing conversations where people are asking questions or seeking recommendations related to your expertise.
  • Step 4) Contribute Value Before Posting Links: Get involved in discussions, provide helpful answers, and establish some credibility before sharing your website.
  • Step 5) Add Your Backlink Naturally: Share a link when it adds genuine value to the conversation, rather than forcing it into every reply.
  • Step 6) Vary Your Anchor Text and Target Pages: Mix branded anchors, naked URLs, and naturally worded links while pointing to different relevant pages on your website. Too many exact-match anchors are a sign of spam to Google.

Pro Tip: Domain Rating and Domain Authority aren’t nearly as important as they used to be, but they are still a good top-level metric for sorting potential forum link targets. You can use Ahrefs or Semrush to find a target’s DR/DA. Or, you can check out helpful metrics for free by signing up for a free account with our link building marketplace, PressWhizz. We have DR, DA, organic website traffic, and other site metrics to help you choose the best possible link building partners.

We recommend using forum links when launching a new website, promoting products or services (especially SaaS tools), or running a campaign focused on improving AI search visibility.

Here are four situations where building forum backlinks makes the most sense:

When Launching a New Website

Forum backlinks can help generate links for new websites and help those sites gain their first visitors.

SEO can take months to return ROI. But if you regularly post in niche-relevant forums, you can get interested visitors right away. Don’t expect much, but it’s a start!

Forum posts can also help diversify your early backlink profile, although they shouldn’t replace higher-quality editorial links.

When You’re Selling Products or Services

Forums are particularly useful for businesses selling products or services because people regularly use them to ask for recommendations, compare alternatives, and research purchases.

Imagine you wanted to buy a kayak and searched “best kayak for rivers”. The first thing you’d see is this Reddit thread (again…Reddit dominates):

And it would be full of product recommendations, like this one:

That type of product recommendation could drive sales easily.

Other examples of niches that benefit from actively participating in Reddit, Quora, or niche forums include SaaS, local service businesses, and outdoor equipment brands. Please see the table below for more on this.

When Improving Brand Visibility

Forum backlinks can support brand-building campaigns by getting your business mentioned in relevant online discussions.

This is very useful when you’re trying to increase branded searches, build industry recognition, or improve your presence in AI-generated answers. Remember that Ahrefs study we mentioned before? That’s why online mentions are so important.

My advice? You should prioritize forums that already rank for relevant industry searches or regularly appear in AI-generated answers.

For Local SEO

Local businesses can use forum backlinks to reach potential customers in their service areas. Local Reddit communities, neighborhood forums, and regional discussion boards often contain people asking for recommendations.

For example, a roofing company could contribute helpful advice to discussions about roof repairs in its city.

These links may generate local referral traffic, build awareness, and support local organic SEO. However, we don’t recommend them for optimizing your Google Business Profile, collecting genuine reviews, or earning relevant local backlinks.

The best forums for building backlinks are Reddit, Quora, GitHub, Warrior Forum, and Hacker News, but there are many others that provide value, depending on your niche.

Some are better for generating referral traffic, while others can help improve brand awareness, build authority, and increase your visibility in AI search results.

Here are 10 popular forum platforms where you can generate free backlinks to your website:

  • Reddit: One of the largest online discussion platforms, with communities covering almost every niche. Reddit is dominating Google SERPs nowadays, so it’s great for brand visibility, referral traffic, and product recommendations.
  • Quora: Another giant Q&A forum. Just answer questions related to your industry and include links to relevant resources when they provide additional value.
  • Stack Overflow: Popular among developers and software companies, this technical Q&A community focuses on programming problems and coding solutions.
  • City-Data: If you’re working on local SEO, City-Data is great. It includes discussions about cities, real estate, relocation, and local services.
  • Warrior Forum: SEO, affiliate marketing, and online business are the main topics discussed in this long-running internet marketing community.
  • Hacker News: Hacker News is one of the most popular places for tech-related businesses to generate forum links. Get your content in front of startup founders, developers, and SaaS professionals through relevant technology discussions.
  • XDA Forums: XDA covers smartphones, mobile apps, custom ROMs, and device troubleshooting.
  • Tripadvisor: Come on, we all know Tripadvisor, whether we like it or not. Travel and hospitality businesses can participate in discussions about destinations, accommodations, restaurants, and local attractions.
  • Moz Community: An established SEO community where marketers can discuss search engine optimization, link building, technical SEO, and digital marketing with other industry professionals.
  • BleepingComputer: Looking to reach an IT or cybersecurity audience? This forum covers malware removal, antivirus software, computer security, and technical troubleshooting.

Keep in mind that most of these platforms have strict rules against spam and excessive self-promotion. Always keep your self-promotion to a minimum, and focus on contributing to relevant discussions rather than dropping backlinks wherever possible. Whenever in doubt, default to forum rules. That’s how you’ll get the most out of your SEO efforts.

The following is an updated list that includes recently active forums where you can begin building backlinks and brand mentions. We’ve done our best to ensure that they are still active and included the Domain Rating or Domain Authority of each one (whichever was higher). For more accurate numbers, you’ll need to research using whichever link building tools you have.

Final Thoughts

It’s not 2012 anymore, but forum posting is still a viable link building strategy in modern SEO. The only things that have changed are:

  1. You can’t scale links en masse anymore
  2. Forum links don’t provide direct ranking benefits
  3. Your goal should be to genuinely help a user instead of just getting a link to your website

SEO forum link building can still drive referral traffic, enhance AI visibility, improve search engine results, and even result in leads and sales…but only when done properly.

Don’t worry, though.

If you follow the advice you read in this guide, you’ll be fine. Choose either a popular forum or a niche-relevant discussion board, then post at a gradual pace without directly promoting yourself. Once you’ve warmed up the account, then you can lightly promote yourself.

If you really want to take things to the next level, reverse engineer your competitors to see which forum links they have. That’s the best place to start.

And, if you find building links to be a hassle, there are always link building services that can help you scale without doing all of the work yourself.

As always, I wish you luck.
